Avoriaz, France

Avoriaz is situated in the centre of the the Portes du Soleil ski area, close to the Swiss boarder. As well as being one of the most modern resorts in the area, the entire town is traffic free, with people traveling either on foot or on a horse drawn sleigh.

The resort was built in the 1960's and as there was limited space, the architects set about designing high rise buildings, up to 16 floors. Unlike many other resorts, the buildings were designed to blend in with the mountains around them and covered in natural materials such as slate and red cedar.

Situated at 1800m, the resort enjoys up to 8m of snow a year, and has 150km of lift served runs and 45km of cross country trails.
