Alpe d'Huez, France

Nicknamed L'Ile au Soleil (the island in the sun), the resort of Alpe d'Huez is one of Europe's largest ski resorts, linking four villages to provide its guests with more than 200 kilometres of piste to enjoy! It's also one of Europe's highest, ensuring a more reliable snow record.

Although not purpose-built as a skiing resort, Alpe d'Huez is nonetheless so facility-rich that it might as well have been. It boasts a sports centre, an outdoor pool and even an ice rink - all free for holders of full area ski passes! Its schools and the gentle slopes near the resort make it a particularly good option for beginners, but there's certainly no lack of exciting runs for intermediates. The slopes are mostly south-facing, so they're well lit and usually covered in the generous snow for which this location is well-reputed.

"L'etalon in Alpe D'huez. Commonly known as the rum bar, big jars of flavoured rums; you know its going to get messy."
